Introduction

SG-ME 4.2.2 is a minor release of the Blue Coat® Systems Director software.

These release notes apply to Director management nodes that are currently running or will be upgraded to the SG-ME 4.2.2 release. Before starting the upgrade process, please review the Upgrade Instructions and the Limitations and Known Issues section.

Changes in this Version

This section lists and describes the significant changes to 4.2.x provided in subsequent releases.

SGME 4.2.2.3 (build 31949)

SGME 4.2.2.2 (build 28044)

SGME 4.2.2.1 (build 26501)

New Features in 4.2.x

SG-ME 4.2.x provides support for ProxySG™ Appliances that use SGOS 3.2.4.x or SGOS 4.x or higher. (Note: While Director has not been tested with SGOS 3.1.x, it is expected to work.)

System Requirements

Hardware Requirements

A new Director management node (800-1) is a Pentium III machine with 866 MHz, 1GB RAM, and one 73GB SCSI hard disk drive. An 800-1 supports up to 500 nodes.

800-0 management nodes can be updated to SMGE 4.2.2, but only 200 nodes are supported.

An upgrade kit is available to convert the 800-0 to an 800-1. Contact Blue Coat or your local Blue Coat Sales Representative or reseller.

Software Requirements

Supported Blue Coat Director systems must be running SG-ME 3.2.3 or higher to upgrade directly to SG-ME 4.2.2. Systems running a Director operating system of 2.1.09 must first upgrade to SG-ME 3.2.3.

The Director Management Console runs on the following platforms:

The client PC running the Director Management Console requires, at a minimum:

During installation of the Director Management Console, you are prompted to select a JRE. You should select JRE 1.4.1_07, which comes with the package. Other versions have not been tested and might not work.

Upgrade Behavior

Before upgrading Director to this release, keep in mind the following:

  • On an upgrade from any release to SG-ME 4.2, the information previously stored in clear will be encrypted, including:
    • SGOS credentials used by Director and Director Management Console.
    • Profiles/overlays/advanced-configs/backups
    • The secret shared between the Director and the RADIUS/TACACS+ server.
    • The SSH keys and the key used for SSHD.

  • Old files in the system that are left after an upgrade can be destroyed by the destroy-old-files command for full security. Note that these old files are in clear and left in the system to allow downgrades.

  • Since information stored on the Director disk is encrypted using the NVRAM pass-code, this information cannot be transferred directly to another Director to be readily available for use.

  • With this release, SSL configuration from the ProxySG is stored on the Director disk.

  • Director does not log any secure information to the syslog.

  • Configuration files are generated by the configuration new command and are stored in /sys/encrypted-config . The config files in this folder are encrypted and cannot be copied directly from one management node to another. The only way to transfer these files is through archive create/restore commands.

  • The SSHv1 and Telnet protocols are no longer configured by default. Because they are insecure protocols, Blue Coat recommends that you do not use them.

Upgrade Instructions

If you are upgrading your Director management node to the new hardware version, complete the following steps:

  1. Archive the existing Director configuration, which includes Director and its associated ProxySGs. For details, see "Archiving and Restoring the Entire Director Configuration," in Chapter 2 of the Blue Coat Director Configuration and Management Guide. (If you are upgrading from SG-ME 2.1.09, you must first upgrade to SG-ME 3.2 or higher. Archiving is a new feature in SG-ME 3.2.1.0.)

  2. Save (upload) the configuration offbox. For details, see "Archiving and Restoring the Entire Director Configuration," in Chapter 2 of the Blue Coat Director Configuration and Management Guide.

  3. Replace the existing 36GB hard disk with the 73GB hard disk. For details, see the Blue Coat Director Upgrade Installation Kit.

  4. Replace the 512 MB RAM with 1GB RAM. For details, see the Blue Coat Director Upgrade Installation Kit.

  5. Replace the CPU. For details, see the Director Upgrade Installation Kit.

  6. Restore the archived Director configuration onto the new hard disk. For details, see "Archiving and Restoring the Entire Director Configuration," in Chapter 2 of the Blue Coat Director Configuration and Management Guide.

  7. Upgrade the Director image. For details, see "Upgrading Director" in Chapter 2 of the Blue Coat Director Configuration and Management Guide.

Director ships with SG-ME 4.2.2.1 already installed on the Director management node. You need to download the Director Management Console software to your PC if you want to use the graphical user interface. For information on downloading the Management Console software, go to the SG-ME Download Site.

When installing the Director Management Console, make sure you do not have multiple versions of the Management Console application on your system. Use the Director uninstaller to remove previous versions before installing a newer version of the Management Console. For information on using the Director installer, refer to the Blue Coat Director Installation Manual, located at the SG-ME Download Site.

Initial configuration information for the Director management node is also available in the Blue Coat Director Installation Manual.

Limitations and Known Issues

Descriptions of limitations and known issues with the release that could be encountered by more than a few customers are provided. Visit this link and read through the issues before upgrading to this release. Visit this link any time you encounter an issue to verify it is not a limitation or a known issue before reporting it to Blue Coat Technical Support.

Documentation

The following documents are available at the Blue Coat Web site and also on the CD-ROM that ships with the product.

  • Blue Coat Director Configuration and Management Guide
  • Blue Coat Director Installation Guide
  • Blue Coat Director Command Line Interface Reference

In addition to the above documents, the Director Management Console contains a built-in HTML version of the Blue Coat Director Configuration and Management Guide. However, this manual is only updated with every dot release. Therefore, Blue Coat recommends that you visit the Blue Coat Web site for the most current documentation.

Clarifications and Errata

The following list describes documentation problems or omitted information:

  • Director supports both "error-pages" and exceptions. Error-pages was an older feature that was replaced by exceptions in newer versions of SGOS.

  • The CLI erroneously indicates that zero cannot be used for the num-commands value in the content options throttle command. The actual num-commands value must be between -1 and 2147483647. Setting the num-commands value to zero disables content management commands from being sent to your ProxySG appliances.
